Melding form with functionality, French-door refrigerators have elegant double doors that open up to an enormous fridge on the top and a freezer drawer beneath. Special features like through-the-door dispensers, high-end ice machines and adjustable flex drawers make them stand out from the crowd.

We contacted Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect, and the founder of LS Projects - for her advice on how to choose the right home. They looked at the storage capacity, layout, and energy efficiency among other factors.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

Like the name suggests, the GE Profile series is geared towards consumers who want to incorporate cutting-edge technologies in their kitchen. The refrigerator is brimming with them, from an in-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a sophisticated water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, Frydge especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Since this refrigerator costs an extra amount, I'd like to see higher quality.

Other than that the fridge is a great choice. It comes with a huge freezer compartment, which is uncommon in counter-depth French door fridges, and it can hold a decent amount of frozen food in comparison to similar models.

Inside the fridge, you'll find 17 shelves and compartments. The refrigerator compartment is 18.5 cubic feet, which is typical for a French-door fridge at this price. It also has a decent sized ice maker packed into the left door, though it isn't the largest I've seen.

You can adjust the shelving in each compartment to create a custom storage setup for what you want to keep. The GE PYE22PYNFS's design for the interior is good-looking, too. The LED lighting adds an appealing accent. The in-door storage bins have a third shelf which can be folded down to store large items. The drawers come with temperature controls that allow you to set them to Meat, Beverage, or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, however I found their textured plastic coatings to be a bit difficult on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator comes with all the features you'd expect from a refrigerator within this price range. It has Wi-Fi as well as app support, and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app is compatible with iOS and Android devices and allows you to control your refrigerator from any place in the globe. It also offers a lot of customization options. It will also send you notifications when the door is left unlocked, when the freezer or fridge requires defrosting, and when the filter requires a change.

It is nice to have GE PYE22PYNFS had Precise Fill which is a feature found in a few GE refrigerators that allows users to choose the number of cups they would like to dispense. It does offer a countdown feature on the fridge display to display how much water you have left, but it's not as helpful as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The Bosch French-door Refrigerator is a striking piece. It's designed to appear like it's a seamless component in your kitchen. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a veggie compartment that keeps fruits and vegetables fresher for longer, and two compressors for preserving food items. The Ice maker we tested is one of the most efficient and produces an ice pyramid with only a little water. This refrigerator is the ideal option for a single family or kitchenettes looking for an integrated look and top-of-the-line food preservation.

This fridge was rated as the best in our Refrigerators Test for a variety of reasons. The temperature of the freezer remained constant at just above 0° Fahrenheit and never fluctuated more than a tiny fraction - this is crucial to avoid the risk of a freezer burn. The fridge's refrigerator section also performed well, achieving the desired initial set temperature within an hour and keeping the temperature constant over the course of our testing.

Bosch is a household name for its top-quality appliances. Therefore, it's no surprise that the Bosch counter depth refrigerator can be connected to your home Wi Fi and Bosch's Home Connect. This app allows you to monitor and control your fridge remotely from your smartphone or tablet. The fridge is expensive, but offers great features and functionality at a fair price.

While the fridge is an incredible piece of equipment but it's important to be aware of the limitations. It has a narrow shelf space, so you may have to think creatively when storing tall objects. Also, the shelves are not sprillproof and can be easily damaged or stained by sharp objects. The trays are easily removed from the refrigerator. However, they should be cleaned regularly to prevent the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S counter-depth refrigerator is a great option for those who require plenty of space in a small frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge is built with a standard French door layout, with two rows of shelves that can be used to capture spills and a set crisper drawers. The top right shelf can be folded down to give tall items more room. There's also a full-width drawer to store products from the deli and an inside water dispenser.

This refrigerator is equipped with an ice maker, making it simple to transfer ice when needed. The freezer also has thoughtful design features, like sliding drawers that allow you to organize your items. It comes with a large bin for storing frozen food and a separate bin for ice.

Another awesome feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. You can manage the temperature, lighting, and other aspects of your fridge using your smartphone. It's a nice method of monitoring and managing your refrigerator, especially when you're away from home.

The SAMSUNG 17.3 Cu Ft Smart French Refrigerator InstaView feature is neat but it doesn't improve the efficiency of the fridge. The refrigerator took longer to defrost food and chill it than the other fridges we tried. This is probably due to its larger capacity.

The doors pose a problem with this refrigerator. They have sunken handles on the front that allow shorter people to easily pull them open from the bottom, however they're still difficult for taller people to guide closed without slamming the doors. It would have been better if they had a front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a good choice for those who want to combine the benefits of a fridge with a French door with an efficient layout. Its capacity is higher than average for a counter-depth model, and it cools evenly and has a good layout. It's also a little cheaper than the best counter-depth refrigerator with an ice maker, which can make it an attractive option.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

If you're looking for a French door refrigerator that won't break the bank, this Frigidaire is a great choice. It has a simple design that's not as visually striking like some of the competitors, but it has enough features that make it a great option. Its main characteristic is the adjustable temperature drawer which helps keep food items such as meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge ice maker and a water dispenser.

Another nice feature is the "Chill Drawer" that sits over the two crisper bins. The drawer lets you redirect a portion of the fridge's cooling power into the area so that you can store foods that require extra attention. This feature can be adjusted using a slider located outside the drawer. You can also set the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've found that the generic settings are more effective than the specific ones.

During my tests, the temperature of the refrigerator stayed fairly consistent across different areas of the fridge. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the refrigerator did not differ much from 38 degrees. This is a great performance however it doesn't rank among the best in our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also pair this fridge with a smart thermometer to get more precise measurements of the internal temperature of your fridge.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made from gray-bodied stainless with a "smudge resistant" finish. It does an excellent job of removing streaks and fingerprints, even compared to glossy stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tried.
