Tools

Having the right tools available is essential when working in the field. This kit was created with this in mind, and includes all the basic hand tools required to repair equipment in the field. All of the tools are made from steel with minimal plastic to ensure they can withstand use. The kit comes complete with an open-top canvas coalcracker tools pouch, reamer, twisted awl cutting shears, gimlet (5MM), wooden spool of sinue, a bottle of coalcracker tool oil and a set of illustrated instructions.

Repair Patches

If you've got a gap or two in your gear, think about adding adhesive patches to your rep kit. These patches are made of an ultra-high-performance adhesive that is applied to a tough polyurethane back that allows a tear to heal under pressure. These patches are available in clear or colored versions and ensure durability against punctures, as well as sun, moisture and extreme temperatures.

If your kit does not include one of the items mentioned above you might want to think about adding a waterproof Aquaseal wader sealant. The water-tight adhesive bonds to metals and fabrics to provide an indestructible fix. This glue is ideal for repairing drysuits and also utilized in the field. Allow the sealant to cure for up to 12 hours before using the repaired equipment.

The essential field fabric kit for packs, tents and rainwear made of silicone-impregnated nylon. The free avon starter kit comes with one Clean Tape patch and a sil nylon repair swatch along with a 1/4-ounce tube of Goretex Sil-Fix repair adhesive, sealant and brush. Apply patch to a clean smooth surface. Allow a minimum 1/2 inch overlap. Release the paper and rub adhesive side down using a moderate amount of pressure.

Surface preparation is essential to successful repairs. Sunblock, acetone, or oils on boots and shoes could affect adhesion. To get the best results, make use of Seam Grip alone or with Cotol-240 Cure Accelerator to speed curing up to two hours.

Adhesive patches

If you're out on the trail but do not have the time to make the full repair of your vulcaniser, these adhesive patches will get you back in the saddle without the wait. Simply roughen the tube using the included scraper, then apply one of the self-adhesive patches to apply the patches.

Clean the punctured area thoroughly and then apply the tube-scuffer, or sandpaper to roughen the surface which assists in making glue stick. Apply a thin layer of glue over the patch. Cover an area that is at least as big as the patch. Allow a few minutes for the glue to harden before pressing the patch down and firmly holding it in the place.

The kit contains two adhesive-backed, clear Tenacious Tape fabric repair patches. It also comes with a 1/4 ounce Seam Grip urethane sealant and repair adhesive. Perfect for reinforcing damaged sleeping bags, tents, rainwear, packs and boots.
