The oropharynx is the part of your throat right behind your mouth. When we do a thorough throat exam, we always take a good look at this area. This area includes your tonsils, the base of your tongue, the soft palate, and the uvula. The oropharynx can be examined visually using a light and tongue depressor, or more comprehensively using flexible endoscopy. Your doctor will be looking for things like redness, swelling, signs of infection like when your tonsils are inflamed (tonsillitis), or any unusual lumps or bumps. Symptoms such as sore throat, pain upon swallowing, or the sensation of a foreign body in the throat can necessitate a more thorough examination of the oropharynx.

Daily Care for Your Nose

If a direct pharyngoscopy using a flexible endoscope is needed, you'll typically be seated comfortably in the examination room. Your doctor will spray a local anesthetic into your nostrils or the back of your throat to numb the area. Next, the thin, flexible tube with the camera will be carefully passed through your nose or mouth and down into your throat to your pharynx. The camera transmits live images to a monitor, allowing the doctor to observe your pharynx and surrounding tissues in real-time. We might ask you to talk, cough, or swallow so we can see how your throat works in action. The whole process usually takes around 5 to 10 minutes and isn't typically painful, though you might feel a bit of pressure or a slight tickle in your nose or throat.
