How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Audi.jpgIn this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are different connector pins, and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. To do this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. If you experience any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and requires replacement audi key fob. 5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues in your car. You should see approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins.
