The performance of a variety of Path of Exile items can be enhanced by upgrading them. They can be a fantastic source of extra damage, more AD or even more attachments.

Rare-grade equipment is often superior to modernized Common or Magic equipment due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a type of upgrade that can be applied to weapons and armor items. They boost the performance of the item upgrades they are connected to. Upgrades to armor can be found in the world of the game and purchased from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Alternately, they can be salvaged from items with upgrade components inside them, with a professional or higher salvage kit.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it will absorb. The absorption of damage by an armor piece will increase when it is upgraded to its maximum upgrade level. It is important to note that this will increase the weight of the armor, so it must be heavier.

There are a variety of armor upgrade available in the game. Each one has a distinct impact. For instance, some upgrades will give the armor a certain number of health points while others will make it lighter and stronger. The name of the armor upgrade will indicate the type of upgrade that an item will receive, as shown below.

Some of the upgrades are also magic or a hybrid of magic and technology, which is indicated by the "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Additionally, some upgrades require charges to use, which are shown by the "Charges" entry in the table below. These charges are either constantly updated or never expire, depending on the upgrade.

The cheapest way to upgrade armor is to use Iron Ore, which can be found through exploring the surroundings and looting chests of minor loot. Titanium is more expensive, however, it is available at the smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, like the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to higher level armor pieces. These upgrades can provide significant boost in stats, and are definitely worth the investment.

The process of upgrading an armor piece to max upgrade level will significantly increase its defense values, but the player should be aware that increasing its weight will drastically reduce its agility and speed. It is not recommended to upgrade armor past +9. The boost in defense generally isn't worth the weight and power cost of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to increase the effectiveness of specific aspects of a weapon. For example an upgrade could improve the damage that is caused by a shotgun's shells or the accuracy of a rifle that snipes. Some weapons have special enhancements to enhance their intrinsic characteristics. These include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and minimizes weapon overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases the velocity of projectiles for greater damage).

Most weapon upgrades require one of three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons and a whetblade to apply. They can be obtained by completing Side Quests or by killing a certain number of bosses and monsters.

The process of upgrading a weapon, equipment Set piece, or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade cost that is based on a specific number of Bars. The higher the upgrade level, the more bars are required to complete it. If you have multiple upgrade materials, the cost of upgrading will be less.

In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade weapon and equipment sets has changed a bit. Prior to Chapter 2 Season 5, you could upgrade your weapon or equipment by paying a specific number of Bars. You could continue to do this until you reach a max upgrade level of the equipment or weapon, following which the upgrades would reset.

You can still do this, but the process is high on RNG and low on agency. You're better off buying gear that has low levels of upgrade items and high base scores and stat distributions. These items will have a better likelihood of granting you highest tier advantages and benefits.

To level up faster, most players will prioritise upgrading their weapons. In addition to these players, they should think about upgrading the weapons they use with their teammates to make them more powerful and effective. Shepard for instance, should upgrade the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R. This will make the weapon more useful when used in conjunction with biotic specialists such as Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels can be used to improve the effectiveness of a skill or provide additional effects in armor and weapons. Jewelry crafting is the process of making them, in which you combine a gemstone with a number specific reagents on a table. The higher the quality of the gem, the greater the secondary effect. These reagents can be found around the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and, sometimes, by salvaging Legendary gear. You can also buy them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The Jeweler can enhance the quality of a gem in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. Based on the tier of the gem, it will provide a different stat boost when slotted into weapons, gear and jewelry.

All tiers of jewels can be made at the Jeweler and Jeweler's Workshop, with the exception of the rare and legendary gems that require you to be at a certain level to qualify for the privilege of having them. Jewels can be substituted with another one without damaging the original. However, you can only replace the jewels in an item upgrader mod of equipment once.

It is common to use more gems for aesthetic reasons. In addition to enhancing performance, the diamonds create an outer layer that is more durable than steel, so the repeated friction from pivots won't cause damage as easily.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs that can enhance the appearance of your shields and weapons. They offer a small benefit and can be swapped freely however they aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs, just like jewelry, can be upgraded at the Jeweler in exchange for gold and Scattered Crystals. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like traits and aegis are not swappable, and can only be retrieved using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are pieces of equipment that bestow many small, but beneficial benefits to your hero. You can find them in the starter area as loot or personal story rewards. They are also available from vendors and by doing road interaction. They can also be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinkets that a player unlocks will be the cloak, which grants a small, but valuable boost in speed of movement and the ability to escape. The player can then acquire necklaces, rings, and amulets, in a similar way as they did with weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment comes with an upgrade slot that can be either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades are smaller and are able to be used on any piece of equipment. Jewels cannot be upgraded or replaced and only work with certain trinkets.

These trinkets provide additional buffs and abilities that are active when the hero isn't engaged in combat. This lets the hero perform better when they are not active, and can also help to compensate for the absence of a solid team or the absence of any slots from the talent tree that normally are filled with the hero's ideal statistics.

As a general rule trinket upgrades should be prioritized over BiS (Best in Slot) items you won't replace anytime soon. Also, consider items with desirable stats that aren't as important as the iLevel of the item that is to be upgraded. This is true especially if you're looking to upgrade several stats on an item. It's better to upgrade one important stat instead of two subpar ones.

At the beginning of the game junglers will usually want to upgrade their trinket into a red one, while top and mid players typically choose the pink or green ward (depending on the game's matchup). These choices will have an impact on a hero's ability to control the map.

In addition to the items mentioned above, players will discover other trinkets in form of rewards and trophies throughout the game. These can be earned by completing certain milestones in the story. For instance, completing the main quest of a chapter or defeating an opponent. They can be viewed by selecting the appropriate achievement in the reward tab of the hero menu.
