Double Glazing Window Repair

Over time double glazing may create problems, such as being difficult to open windows or doors that gets stuck. Fortunately, these issues can be resolved easily.

Many homeowners attempt to solve these issues on their own, however, this should be left to the experts. It's risky to fix these issues without the right tools and knowledge.

Broken Panes

A damaged window can be a frustrating and inconvenient issue. It can let cold or hot air into your home, and leave a gap which allows debris or moisture to get in. This can also reduce your energy efficiency as your AC or furnace will need to work harder to keep your home cool. Depending on the season and whether you have single-pane or double-pane windows, you may be able to repair the damage by using silicone sealant. However, a permanent fix will require the assistance of a professional.

A cracked window can be fixed with high-quality tape. A tape strip placed over a crack can prevent it from escalating. A crack that is large enough to penetrate the glass, or is too large to be covered with tape will require to be replaced completely.

Broken glass can be caused by many things: a pebble from the lawnmower that lands on the window; a drink set down too heavily on a glass-topped table or a pet's euphoric leap when you open the door. The frames of your window could move over time and crack the packaging material that holds the glass sheets in position.

Wear a pair of thick gloves when you've broken a pane of glass. Put a cardboard container near the pane to catch any fragments. Remove the sash and work on a level surface, such as the table. Wear a mask to avoid breathing in glass shards.

After the old glass has been removed, remove any varnish or paint from the frame of the window. You can also use a heating gun to soften any old glazing putty and metal glazing points that held the glass in place.

Then you can determine the opening of a new glass. It is best to order your replacement glass slightly smaller than the original opening to allow for expansion and contraction. You can request that your local hardware store or home center cut it to these measurements.

Once you have the glass, you can press it into the frame. Fill any gaps with silicone caulk. You can buy it at a local home improvement store. Then, smooth the caulk with a putty knife. Add glazier's points to the corners and frames of the glass approximately every six inches, so that the glass is securely held in place.

Condensation

Condensation is a possibility on double-glazed windows, no matter if they are brand new. This is especially true in winter when colder air collides with warm glass. While it could cause some issues, it's typically a major issue. This is because condensation on windows indicates that your double-glazed is working properly.

It could be an indication that your seal is not working and moisture is entering the gap. If you notice a milky smudge on your window or if water beads appear across its surface, this needs to be addressed to prevent mould, mildew, or further damage.

Condensation can be easily eliminated. A technician will drill a tiny number of holes in the window frame, allowing the moisture that has been trapped to go away. This is referred to as defogging. It can also be used to remove the stains caused by the trapped moisture.
